Considering its use as a shirt underlayer, the opening is shifted from the center front to the side, presumably to prevent overlap when worn beneath a shirt. The back neck is reinforced with the same fabric applied from the reverse side. The fabric is a jersey characterized by natural irregularity. It is knitted at a high density using yarn developed to reproduce the unevenness typical of an era when clean, uniform straight yarns could not yet be spun.The cuffs reproduce the two-tier circular-knit rib construction found in 1910s undershirts.
